Have you ever noticed how much we care for our skin—scrubbing, moisturizing, toning—but almost ignore the scalp , where our hair actually grows? I was the same way. For me, haircare was limited to just shampoo and conditioner. But when I started taking my scalp care routine seriously, I realized that healthy hair really starts with a healthy scalp.
My hair’s texture was initially dry, with oily roots and frizzy ends. Hair fall had also begun, and I couldn’t figure out where the problem lay. Then I learned online and from salon experts that along with hair, it’s also important to cleanse and nourish the scalp . From that day on, I started creating a simple scalp care ritual for myself— “Scrub, Cleanse, and Nourish.”
Step 1: Scrub – The Detox My Scalp Needed

I initially thought a scalp scrub was an extra step, but the first time I tried it, it literally felt refreshing. I made my own DIY scrub— a mix of brown sugar and coconut oil . This natural scrub removes dead skin and product buildup.
Every Sunday, I lightly massage it with my fingertips to increase blood circulation. My scalp felt light and clean the first time I used it. Now I realize that just as face exfoliation gives skin a glow, scalp exfoliation is essential for hair growth.
Step 2: Cleanse – Gentle Shampoo, Big Difference

I used to use harsh shampoos that gave an instant clean feeling but dried out my hair. Now I use a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo (I personally like L’Oréal Paris Extraordinary Clay and The Moms Co. Natural Protein Shampoo).
I don’t go after a lot of foam when I shampoo; I just massage it in lightly. This removes oil and dirt without stripping the scalp. I thought a soft shampoo wouldn’t remove oil, but surprise! The scalp remains both clean and hydrated.
Step 3: Nourish – Leave-In Tonic & Oil Love

After shampooing, I added a leave-in scalp tonic to my routine. I use Mamaearth’s Onion Scalp Tonic because it’s non-sticky and goes straight to the roots. This step was a game changer for me. Once I started using it regularly, hair fall noticeably reduced and my scalp itchiness also went away.
Sometimes at night, I also do a light oil massage —mostly with coconut or argan oil. This is like my relaxation therapy. It takes away the fatigue of the entire day and nourishes my scalp.
Bonus Step: Little Lifestyle Changes That Helped
Scalp care isn’t just about products. I now drink more water, eat a balanced diet, and don’t tie my hair in tight buns. These small habits have made a huge difference in my hair health.
Results I Noticed

I noticed a difference within a few weeks. My scalp felt clean and fresh, dandruff was almost gone, and my hair felt more shiny and manageable. Previously, I used to use dry shampoo every other day, but now my scalp wasn’t greasy for 3-4 days. I felt like my hair was finally breathing.
Final Thoughts
I realized that scalp care isn’t a luxury, it’s a basic necessity . We use exfoliation and moisturizer for our skin, so our scalp is an extension of that.
If you want real change in your hair, create a simple routine— scrub, cleanse, and nourish. This routine has become a self-care ritual for me. Every Sunday, when I massage my scalp, I detox not just my hair but my mood as well.
This blog is based on my personal experience. Every scalp type is different, so before using a new product, please do a patch test and adjust the frequency according to your scalp.
